What is Snowdonia Made Of?

Snowdonia is composed entirely of cavalry twill. Cavalry twill is made from a worsted-spun wool warp with a woollen weft, tightly woven and milled to emphasise the enticing steep double twill lines on the face of the cloth. It’s a high-quality fabric known for its strength, durability, and warmth.

Cavalry twill has a distinctive weave that creates a diagonal pattern on the fabric, enhancing its strength and resistance to abrasion. If you look closely at the surface, you can see two parallel lines running down the fabric. To create a steeper twill line, more warp ends are used relative to the weft. Of the wool twills, serge typically has an even balance of warp and weft, gabardine has more warp ends, and cavalry twill has the most of all.

The History of Cavalry Twill

The exceptional durability and warmth of Snowdonia cloth are attributed to its construction using cavalry twill. This high-quality fabric has a long and illustrious history, tracing its roots back to the British military.

Cavalry twill was originally created for military riding trousers and breeches, hence the name. Its strength and resistance to abrasion were essential qualities for these garments.

Why Choose Snowdonia?

Garments made from Snowdonia, hold their shape well and drape beautifully due to the fabric’s good structure. It has a smooth surface with a subtle texture and a clean drape.

Designer Karen Whittaker said: “I was aware of the twill’s iconic British history and recognised its potential for a heavyweight cloth. Snowdonia is a culmination of our passion for creating high-quality, enduring fabrics. Loosely inspired by the rich history of British textiles, we set out to develop a material that would be both luxurious and practical. The result is Snowdonia, a cloth that combines the strength and durability of cavalry twill with the softness and warmth of wool. We believe that Snowdonia offers a truly exceptional fabric experience. It was lovely to design, and I enjoy working with it.”
